I have ADHD and work mostly with folks that have some form of executive dysfunction. One of the ways to get things moving is, "I might as well..." E.g. "I've got ten minutes, I might as well wash a dish and feel the warm water" and then in ten minutes it turns out you've washed all your dishes - like magic! (Am I ignoring dishes right now? Yes, of course.)

Your line "The thing I come back to again and again though, is that individually, none of us were going to get through any of this" reminded me of what I've been using for myself and sharing with friends when I start to panic. "I was always going to die, I might as well do something while I'm here".

I've written a few times about movements like the Secession of the Plebians and how relevant those movements are to current events. We're in Italy finalizing our dual citizenship, but that plan is losing steam now that were here and talking and listening, quite evident that Europe is preparing for war. Now plan A seems again to be to work with like minded folks in our area to find land and form an intentional community. We have a good start of left oriented people with farming, security, prepping, other critical skills. Because the minute our mass protests become a threat, the shooting will start.

We in the anti zionist jewish left in Palestine always compare Israel to nazi Germany, and this is another example of how history really doesn't repeat itself, but how monsters create other monsters. It's interesting how Israelis use and manipulate history. Not only that the crimes towards the Palestinians are similar to the crimes of the holocaust, Israelis use the holocaust as an excuse for everything they're doing, while at the same time accusing the other side as being the nazis. Similarly, the Israelis are denying the fact there was and there still is an ongoing nakba, and at the same time threatening to do "a second nakba". and I'm thinking all the time about how ordinary Israelis are actually much worse than ordinary Germans at the time, because back then it was really scary to resist, while here it's possible (if you're Jewish, even though we get beaten and arrested, still possible)

Once upon a time I accidentally got an answer right in school and so that lesson has stuck with me: Even if a piece of analysis is poorly formed or generally incorrect, if enough people adopt it then it will begin to shape the world in spite of its flaws because people believe it to be true. But I like your analysis taking us further than that - nudging us to learn about other relevant stories that exist .. not just the example that looms largest in our mythology right now.

This is a great piece. I think when studying history it's important to know nothing overlays exactly. It can be a guide, not an instruction manual. Still, the more knowledge the better, the more tools in your toolbox etc.

I love what you said about people and not states winning WWII. That's very true. When the U.S. was still sitting on the sidelines Americans were going to fight in Spain, with the Eagles Squadron, the Flying Tigers, and the French Foreign Legion to name a few.

Amazing about your grandpa. The silent service was the deadliest for servicemembers. I think something like 30 percent died (top of my head need to google).

There are lots of people in this country willing to resist Fascism, and I think we can resist it effectively.

È questo il fiore del partigiano

Morto per la libertà"

Unfortunately, I am late with my translation into German, because, as you can probably imagine, times are turbulent for us too and some things that were seemingly “in order” before are getting mixed up. I think that your contribution fits well here, but I fear that the tendency to repeat history is not a major problem for the majority of people, especially here among us Krauts. That's what happens when you don't learn any real, fundamental lessons from history, when you only look out for yourself and see “the others” as the cause of all evil...
