For whatever reason, I’ve been asked for writing advice more in the past couple months than usual, so it’s time for me to revise and re-post this essay I originally wrote for my now-defunct blog a few years back.
I saved this post as soon as I saw it, and have just now read it! I remember sitting in the student center at college, writing in a composition notebook, when one of my professors saw me and asked what I was writing. "A novel," was my casual reply. That was 2015. So I absolutely laughed at the first advice. There's still no novel. A few essays, some poetry, and short stories I wrote as a child that my dad still talks about. Love this advice so much, and love all your work.
